CLINICS
Maternity Medical
Services
Antenatal and postnatal care in pregnancy is provided by all the doctors in conjunction
with the midwives.
Family Planning Services
Four of the five doctors and the practice sister are able to offer confidential
advice on contraception.
Dr Delany is not available for family planning consultations involving any form
of contraception.
Child Health Surveillance
The practice provides child health surveillance. The child will normally be invited
for assessment at six weeks with the doctor and then further periodical assessments
with the health visitors. Please bring your child's record book with you when
you attend. It is important that all infants and children are protected from
potentially serious diseases and we recommend that all immunisations are given.
If you wish to discuss any aspect of immunisations or child care, please contact
the health visitor.
Minor Surgery Services
The practice undertakes minor surgical procedures eg removal of lumps and cysts,
joint injections etc. Dr Saunders provides a cryotherapy clinic once a month
to freeze warts, verrucae etc. Appointments for minor surgery and cryotherapy
are made after consultation with the doctor.
Special Medical Examination
Medical examinations for life assurance, pre-employment medicals, HGV, taxi driver,
sports medicals etc are undertaken by arrangement with the doctors.
These and certain other services are not covered by the NHS and will attract
a fee recommended by the BMA. Please contact reception for an appointment and
advice regarding the fee.
Private Fees
Certain items such as letters to solicitors, employers, private sick notes, BUPA
/private health insurance forms etc are charged to the patient as they are not
NHS work. Please enquire at reception for the fee.
Medical Certificates
A doctor's medical certificate is not needed if you are off work for less than
seven days, but your employer should accept a self certification form. If you
are ill for seven days or more you will have to be seen by a doctor to obtain
a medical certificate. SCIs (Self Certification Forms) are available at reception.
Some employers may insist on a "sick note" for illnesses lasting less
than seven days. As this is not a statutory requirement it is considered a private
arrangement for which the doctor will make a charge.
Adult
Vaccination And Immunisation
We are committed to preventative medicine and therefore encourage all patients
to make sure that their vaccinations are up to date. Adult vaccinations are carried
out by the practice nurses for all adult requirements including vaccination for
travel abroad (with the exception of Yellow Fever). It is especially important
that all gardeners are covered against tetanus. We also recommend that all adults
should have a tetanus at least every five to ten years. If you have never had
a tetanus injection it is important for you to have a course of three injections
to give you full immunity. It is also important that patients under the age of
40 (or older, if travelling abroad) make sure that their polio immunisation is
up to date. We recommend a booster dose is administered every five years.
Any woman who may be thinking of having children should consider having a blood
test to check that she is immune to German Measles (Rubella) before she becomes
pregnant, as the result may indicate that a Rubella vaccination is advisable.
Anyone planning holidays abroad should check with us well before they are due
to travel (a minimum of two months) so that we can make sure that any necessary
vaccinations are completed in time.
Influenza vaccination is offered completely free to all our patients over 16
years of age in October every year. It is strongly recommended for high risk
patients, eg the elderly, those with a heart or chest disease, diabetics or those
who work in institutions or nursing homes. Remember that we only have a limited
amount of this vaccine available and may not be able to obtain further supplies
in the event of an epidemic. Please contact the reception staff each September
to make an appointment for this vaccination to be administered. If you have any
questions about vaccinations it is better to ask rather than just hope you are
protected.
